In recent years, districts have recognized a growing importance in English as a Second Language certification, as well a need for bilingual teachers.
West Texas is no exception.
Many up and coming teachers are getting their ESL or bi-lingual certification.
Roy Hurst is the certification officer for UTPB and he says this area is in high demand Since 80 % of their graduates end up in areas that have a high population of second language learners.
"We’ve had an increase in the last year and a half in teachers in fields where they may not even think of ESL, adding ESL as a supplement."
Hurst says they encourage students in the school of education to look into the training so they are more marketable when looking for jobs.
"ESL strategies are good strategies period. The districts recognize that and they would like to have every teacher coming out with an ESL supplement."
Mike Adkins with ECISD says many of the teachers in the district are ESL certified, even if they don't teach an ESL class.
"A teacher who’s not teaching ESL but has the skills and certification to help those kids it just helps in that particular teachers classroom..."
He says many students can still use the extra support when they leave the ESL program.
"The teachers are all about helping kids succeed and they want everyone in their class to do well and achieve at a high level, so if this helps a handful of kids succeed then the teachers are for that."
UTPB is offering scholarships for students willing to teach ESL or bilingual students for 4th grade and up.
Applications for fall are still open.
